David Cline was born abt. 1790 in Virginia and died before 1870 in Scotland County, Missouri. David Cline married Barbara Hoppess who was the daughter of Henry and Barbara Hoppess. Barbara was born in North Carolina but the Hoppess family moved from North Carolina to Wythe County, VA by 1799. Henry Hoppess died abt. 1838 in Wythe County.
David and Barbara Cline lived in Tazewell County, VA from 1818 until 1828 when they moved (or border changed) to Wythe County, Virginia. In the mid 1840's, David and Barbara Cline and their son, Israel Cline and family moved to Scotland County, Missouri.
According to the Kimberling Baptismal records, their son, Israel Cline, was born on April 22, 1815 and was baptized on August 12, 1815. Israel's baptismal sponsor was "the mother" [i.e. Barbara]. Israel married Elizabeth Kinder on June 8, 1837 in Wythe County, VA.
Israel Cline is not the same Israel as an "Israel Browning" that was bound out to David Cline on January 14, 1817. Israel Browning is listed in the Wythe County Court Order Book along with brother, Enos Browning: "overseers of the poor to bind out Enos Browning, a poor boy, to Geo. Musser and Israel Browning, a poor boy, to David Cline." (Transcribed on page 114 of Mary Kegley's Book, The Lost Children of Wythe County, Virginia 1790-1878, Poor School Children, Orphans and Apprentices from County Records (1995). Israel Browning and his brother, Enos, are again bound out on September 9, 1817, this time to Martin Stailey and Abraham Stailey, respectively. Id. at 116. That record further states that both Enos and Israel Browning are "infants of Charles Browning, removed." Id. The term, "infant" is a legal term here and means a person under the age of majority (18 or 21 yrs old). Footnoted there is a reference to Charles Browning, who married Polly Redcap on September 22, 1807 as per the Wythe County marriage records.
This record states that Charles Browning "removed." This probably means that he left the area and/or abandoned his children. According to Mary Kegley, "the overseers of the poor were often called upon to bind out children as apprentices, for various reaosns. Perhaps their paretns had died, or the breadwinner had died or left the county leaving the family without support." Id. at 91.
David Cline's family appears not to be involved with our William. For more information on David Cline's family, please go to a very informative website from this family: http://clinefamilytree.com/clinehistory.html According to this website, David is the oldest son of a Peter Cline (not the same Peter of the Tug), born abt. 1763 in Germany and who later emigrated to Virginia and had eleven children.
1820 Tazewell County, Virginia Census
David Cline: one male under 10; one male 16-18; two males 16-26; one male 26-45
two females 26-45
three persons engaged in agriculture
From this census record, it appears that there are only four males, and not five males, in the household, because only three are engaged in agriculture. The one male under 10 is Israel [b. 1815] and the one male between 26-45 id David. The one male between 16-18 and the other male between 18-26 are unknown.
David Cline is 30 years old during this census so it would appear that he is not old enough to have fathered either of the two older males. One of the females between 26-45 is David's wife, Barbara. The other female is unknown but also cannot be a daughter of David and Barbara Cline.
1840 Wythe County, Virginia Census
David Cline: one male under 5; one male between 30-40; one male between 60-70
one female between 20-30; one female between 40-50.
The male between 30-40 is most likely Israel Cline. First, Israel is married in Wythe County. Also, court records from the late 1830's and early 1840's show Israel engaged in various land transactions in Wythe County. Finally, Israel is living with David Cline in the 1850 Scotland County census and the court case of Duncan v. Crook (1871), 49 Mo. 116, states that Israel was a "habitual drunkard."
The female between 20-30 is undoubtedly Israel's wife, Elizabeth Kinder and the male under 5 is Israel and Elizabeth's son, Jacob. The other female listed as between 40-50 is Barbara, who was born around 1790 and would make her about 50 years old for this census.
The male between 60-70 is David. However, this would make David born between 1770-1780 which is inconsistent with the other three censuses where David is listed . As such, this is probably an error.

Duncan v. Crook (1871), 49 Mo. 116 (Involving David Cline, Israel Cline and Elizabeth Cline)
The Missouri Supreme Court case, Duncan v. Crook, provides some additional background on this family. As per the Court's opinion, Elizabeth Cline is the daughter of Israel Cline and the granddaughter of David Cline. David Cline bought land with his own money in his granddaughter Elizabeth's name. His son, Israel, was a "habitual drunkard" and "had abandoned his family" and that, for several years before the sale of Elizabeth's land, the rest of Israel's family had resided with David Cline. David Cline was appointed "curator" (a person charged with supervising the administration of the affairs of an emancipated minor) to Elizabeth. Upon petition to the county court of Scotland County, the court ordered David Cline to sell the land he had bought for Elizabeth "at private sale for the support and education of his ward." David Cline sold the land and "paid over the proceeds to the mother for the purpose specified."
This land was apparently sold by David Cline to Allen Crook, the defendant in this case. It appears that, sometime after J.B. Duncan and Elizabeth Cline were married, the couple sued Allen Crook over Elizabeth's former land, arguing that her grandfather, David Cline, as curator of Elizabeth, had no right to legally sell her land. The court disagreed, and granted its decision in favor of Allen Crook.
_______
It appears also that another of Israel Cline's daughters, Martha J. Cline, married Jennings Duncan who is most probably a brother of J.B. Duncan who married Martha's sister, Elizabeth.
