Update: Below is a picture of the William Cline headstone that was delivered to my house in Avon Lake, Ohio on December 26, 2008. Of note, the headstone was provided free by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs. Of note, as per the V.A., the writing on the headstone is limited to the information provided on the soldier's official compiled service records. No additional information may be added. Specifically, the only items allowed on the headstone include: the soldier's name, rank, company, and regiment as they appear in the compiled service records; and dates of birth and death. Our William Cline Johnson served as a private in Company I, 16th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A. However, his service records do not include the "Johnson" surname. As such, the Johnson surname was not included on the headstone by the V.A.
The Headstone Dedication Ceremony will take place Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Cline Johnson Cemetery.
The Cline Johnson Cemetery is located on Rt. 617 (Red Root Ridge Rd) just off of U.S. Highway 422 on Red Root Ridge in Tazewell County, Virginia. The Cemetery land is part of the original two-hundred acres that are described in the 1886 Land Deed.
At some point, the Cemetery land, as well as additional land for a church, was deeded to the Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church. Various Clines and Johnsons, as well as others, are buried there. Two sons of William Cline Johnson, John Henry Cline Johnson and his full-blood brother, Boston Cline Johnson, are buried in this cemetery. Interestingly, John Henry is buried as a "Cline" and Boston is buried as a "Johnson." Another Cline Johnson cemetery is located in Russell County.
According to "Old Man" Bill Cline, William Cline Johnson and wife Sophia Robinett Cline Johnson, are buried at the top of the knoll of the Cline Johnson Cemetery under several trees. In 1990/91, an inspection of the Cemetery revealed two grave sites that are clearly marked with upright fieldstones at the top of the knoll where Old Man Bill Cline indicated. Old Man Bill's description along with the fieldstones leave no doubt that Wllliam Cline Johnson and wife, Sophia are indeed buried there.
Aside from the Cemetery and the Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church land, "Clines Road" is only a few hundred feet from the Cemetery and also appears to be part of the original two hundred acres listed in the 1886 Land Deed. Approximately 15 acres of the original 200 are still owned by a descendent of Boston Cline Johnson.
